Having persuaded Congress to pass a law requiring U.S. flags to be made of domestically produced bunting, General Benjamin F. Butler founded the U.S. Bunting Co. in Lowell, Mass. in 1865. Benjamin Franklin Butler was born in Deerfield, New Hampshire, the sixth and youngest child of John Butler and Charlotte Ellison Butler.
